Have Past DUIs? Here's How to Ensure 2016 is "DUI Free"

|

If you have a prior arrest for driving under the influence (DUI) in California, we encourage you to take steps to avoid being charged with any subsequent offenses. In California, second and third offenses can carry much harsher consequences, exposing a person to jail time, stiff fines, and a lengthy license suspension. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to help make 2016 a "DUI free" year.

1. Get a Ride Home

If you will be drinking, it is helpful to make a transportation arrangement beforehand. Call a cab, bring a designated driver, or make overnight plans. Whatever fees you may pay for a hotel or cab fare will be preferable to the consequences of a DUI.

2. Know Your Limit

If you are drinking, try to stay under the legal limit. In the state of California, a person can be arrested for DUI if they are operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% or more. Following are some tips to help you keep your BAC under control, including:

  • Pacing yourself to one drink per hour
  • Eating plenty of food while drinking
  • Waiting a sufficient amount of time before driving
  • Drinking plenty of water

It is important to note that everyone reacts to alcohol differently, and there is no surefire method to keep your BAC under the legal limit. It is best that you use your judgment and exercise extreme caution when deciding to get behind the wheel with any level of alcohol in your system.

3. Maintain Your Vehicle

A busted tail light or expired registration tags can easily get you pulled over, which is the last thing you need after a night of drinking. Even if you are under the legal limit and are pulled over, it is possible that you can be arrested if an officer smells alcohol or sees signs that you have been drinking. Keeping your vehicle maintained and driving safely can reduce your chances of being pulled over on the way to your destination.
